BL – The Portrait of Time: A Design Against Digital Amnesia
1. Design Summary: Confronting Digital Ephemerality
In an era defined by planned obsolescence and the fragile nature of digital memory, BL stands as a counterforce—a cultural resistance against forgetfulness.
Rather than treating design as disposable trend, we view it as an act of preservation.
Through The Portrait of Time, BL transforms the ordinary object of eyewear into a “Future Antique” and a “Cultural Vessel”, preserving emotion, intellect, and the essence of time itself.
Drawing from Film Noir aesthetics—its high contrast, sharp light, and existential tone—this project expresses the tension between permanence and impermanence.
In doing so, it asks a question that defines our age: How can design outlive its own time?
2. Concept and Solution: The Time Capsule Narrative
At the heart of the project lies the “Time Capsule”—a deliberate elevation of packaging from protective shell to permanent artifact of preservation.
The capsule is designed not just to contain, but to endure.
Its visual language, rooted in stark contrast and metallic luster, evokes the cinematic sense of timeless drama.
Each surface is treated as a record of time, allowing the object to embody both memory and emotion.
Through this, the packaging becomes a living archive, where the user acts as the curator of their own history.
We call this principle “emotional durability”—a design that stays relevant not through novelty, but through meaning.
3. Execution: Precision and Poetic Craft
The aluminum capsule—the physical manifestation of the Time Capsule—was meticulously crafted using solid-grade aluminum, anodized for longevity, and laser-engraved with fine details that accentuate its texture and depth.
Its base features a graphic-only instruction manual, designed to be universally legible without text.
This decision ensures the information remains timeless—free from linguistic or cultural obsolescence.
Every edge, texture, and proportion was refined to communicate a message: A well-made object needs no translation.
The result is not merely packaging—it is an objet d’art, a physical statement that merges precision engineering with philosophical intent.
4. Sustainability: From Circularity to Permanence
BL’s approach to sustainability goes beyond material substitution.
It challenges the cultural mindset of disposability by designing for permanence.
The eyewear pouch is crafted from recycled Tyvek®, sourced from repurposed Dupont protective suits—lightweight, resilient, and highly durable.
This not only minimizes ecological impact but embodies the idea of material accountability.
More importantly, the aluminum capsule is designed as a heirloom object, extending its lifespan from months to decades.
This transition—from circularity to absolute longevity—represents a paradigm shift in sustainable thinking.
True sustainability, for us, lies not in reuse, but in respect for time itself.
5. Impact and Cultural Recognition
The Portrait of Time has been internationally recognized across multiple disciplines:
It received the iF Design Award for product excellence, the Dieline Award (3rd Place) for narrative innovation, and reached the final evaluation round of Japan’s Good Design Award, while also shortlisted for the Golden Pin Design Award.
These honors reflect not only design quality, but also its cultural resonance.
BL bridges the divide between luxury craftsmanship and social commentary, proving that packaging can be both collectible and responsible.
It exemplifies our guiding belief:
“The design of things must always serve the design of matters.”
Ultimately, The Portrait of Time is more than a product—it is a philosophy, a meditation on memory, and a design meant to live beyond its age.
