Unico Modular Brand Design Communication

Unico Modular Brand Design Communication

Unico Modular is a family-led business based in Czech Republic specialising in modular buildings. They employ around 250 people and deliver their products all across Europe, mostly to Belgium and Germany. The company has approached us with a requirement to design a new logo and give their brand a much-needed refresh. As a well established company they were not looking to win new clients, on the contrary, they receive more requests than they can process. The main objective was for their visual identity and communication to match their position on the market. We are delighted to say, the logo was only the beginning of a pleasant collaboration which soon spread beyond the initial brief. From corporate branding, we gradually moved into the field of employer branding.

One of Unico Modulars’ challenges is attracting and retaining quality workforce. The brand also has to appeal to potential talent and invoke pride in existing workers. Several industries are facing a hard challenge as most of the young upcoming generation seeks only to sit in a well-air-conditioned offices all day and sip barista-perfect coffee. How do you, then, promote a physically demanding job which requires one to get dirty and sweat through their shirt? The answer is surprisingly simple: we were brutally honest. For their new recruitment campaign we visited their production halls and produced a series of portraits of their workers as they went about their jobs. We wanted to document the workers without embellishments, no make-up or styling. All that’s present are real working people who we asked to pose for the camera for a few minutes. This recruitment campaign is aimed at men (and women) who don’t mind getting their hands dirty and are looking for a long-term job outside of the office with an informal workplace atmosphere, security and stability.
It is aimed at people who want to create and see the result of their work at the end of the day.

The portraits were so well received by our client, that they decided to decorate the company premises with them as well. We picked 10 of the portraits and printed them in large format on aluminium base – to continue the industrial theme. The results were so striking and authentic, we felt we simply had to share their message. We organised a month long exhibition in Nivy mall (Bratislava, daily footfall 70 000) where we shared the message of the campaign with the public. “Honour Work” is a greeting which was tarnished by the old regime. With this exhibition, we wanted to draw attention to the original meaning of the phrase. The exhibition was very well received. The recruitment campaign is still ongoing.

Despite being a very technical company, Unico Modular team are warm, playful and fun loving people. They wanted that reflected in their internal communication and space. What started as wallpaper design for the canteen has grown in popularity among all employees. The custom illustrated pattern inspired by the work of Keith Haring has made its way onto cups & mugs, further wallpapers in meeting rooms and now even hoodies, trainers, socks and tote bags, which the employees are going to receive as present for Christmas.
Note: We are now delivering a second edition of cups and mugs as all 300 pieces have “mysteriously disappeared”

As part of the still ongoing brand journey, we redesigned the logo and all stationery, branded corporate cars, prepared a new website (still work in progress), produced a video and even ventured into redesigning their office space.
