Umba’s vision goes beyond traditional banking; it’s about transforming financial empowerment across Africa. Tailored specifically for Africa’s underserved market, Umba provides a transparent, low-fee digital banking experience that enables users to take full control of their finances. With a range of products like UmbaPay for seamless business transactions, high-yield savings accounts, and specialized loan products including logbook and car finance loans, Umba is rethinking financial services for consumers and SMEs alike.
Following their first round of funding, I had the privilege of leading Umba’s rebranding efforts to refresh and strengthen its market presence. The goal was to bring Umba’s mission to life visually and experientially. Taglines like “Beyond banking,” “More than banking,” and “You’re in control” were crafted to reflect Umba’s empowering, community-centered approach, striking a balance between fun, confidence, and accessibility. This rebranding aimed to resonate with Umba’s growing, digitally-savvy audience who value ease, transparency, and a bank that meets them where they are.
The updated website became the centerpiece of this transformation, with a feature-rich and user-friendly design that simplifies Umba’s robust service offerings. Each section on the site communicates Umba’s core values: empowerment, flexibility, and trust. By creating an engaging visual language and a fresh tone of voice, Umba’s digital presence now clearly reflects its role as a financial ally for Africa’s evolving market.
Umba’s brand refresh not only redefined its identity but also strengthened its connection with users. The project’s outcome is a banking platform that feels local, relevant, and tailored to the unique financial needs of African consumers and business owners. Today, Umba is more than just a banking service; it’s a vibrant community built on accessibility, empowerment, and a deep understanding of Africa’s digital economy.
This project was an incredible journey, capturing Umba’s bold ambitions and bringing them to life through design. It’s about setting a new standard for what banking can be in Africa—a service that feels modern, relevant, and deeply connected to its community.
