Tushi Design Revives Chinese Heroism with Dynamic Oolong Tea Packaging

Tushi Design Revives Chinese Heroism with Dynamic Oolong Tea Packaging

This is a collector’s edition oolong tea packaging, featuring leaves sourced from ancient tea trees in Phoenix Mountain, Chaozhou, China, a globally renowned origin for premium oolong tea. The design is inspired by Yingge Dance, a vibrant local folk tradition from Chaoshan that blends martial arts, theater, and dance. Performers in Yingge Dance embody heroic characters from the classic Chinese novel Water Margin, symbolizing valor and protection.

In this design, we selected four of the most representative heroes of the Water Margin for creative reinterpretation, and depicted their heroic and dynamic dances through modern illustration language. Each hero not only represents a character and spiritual symbol, but also echoes the taste characteristics of tea, making the packaging a visual and cultural narrative medium.

In order to more realistically restore the tension and rhythm of the Yingge dance performance, the design team used **long exposure and multi-flash photography technology (multi-flash photography)** to capture the performers’ movement trajectory and transform these image data into the basis of illustration design. This photography technique can present multiple moments of continuous dynamics in one picture, making the character’s posture look as coherent as a gust of wind, while strengthening the visual impact, it also retains the unique rhythm of Yingge dance.

The illustration style adopts a semi-figurative approach, combining the modeling elements of traditional Chinese opera with modern graphic design language, making the characters both recognizable and artistically tense. The facial paintings, clothing patterns, and prop details are all derived from the traditional prototypes of Yingge dance, and are reconstructed in a modern art style to attract the aesthetic recognition of young consumers.

For sustainability, the packaging employs a unified outer box, with each flavor distinguished by a lightweight waist seal, minimizing ink usage. The materials are eco-friendly paper, aligning with the brand’s commitment to environmental responsibility. This design bridges the gap between heritage and modernity, inviting consumers to experience Chaoshan’s living cultural traditions while promoting a sustainable future.

In essence, this design isn’t just about packaging; it’s a celebration of cultural vitality, heroism, and eco-conscious craftsmanship.
