The Tolerance Project asks prominent designers from the around the world, to visualize the word ‘tolerance’ in their native language, or relatable local context. Each designer creates a poster as their contribution to the traveling Tolerance Poster Show exhibition.

Founded by Mirko Illic in 2017, the Tolerance Poster Show has brought artful messages of tolerance, acceptance & inclusion to over 400,000 people in over 40 countries.

The exhibition showcases works of graphic design & illustration from renowned graphic artists, including Milton Glaser, David Tartakover, Edel Rodriguez, Jean Quarcoopome, Niklaus Troxler, Yuko Shimizu, Paula Scher, Manuel Estrada, Jianping He, Hoon-Dong Chung, Seymour Chwast, Steff Geissbuhler, Pepijn Zurburg, Tom Geismar, Kit Hinrichs, Alain Le Quernec, Bob Gill, Yue Chen, Brandt Botes, Shino Suefusa, Parisa Tashakori, George Tscherny and Mehmet Ali Türkmen amongst many others. Each using their respective signature design styles & methods to visualize tolerance & share powerful messages with the world.

My submission was a typographic poster designed using a single weight font, that takes inspiration from the bold lettering used as sticker designs on the backs of the iconic bright yellow ‘danfo’ buses in Nigeria & in Ghana. These stickers convey interesting messages in a variety of tones; sometimes comical & proverbial, sometimes protesting & inspiring.

The final poster has been chosen to be a part of the Tolerance Poster Show, & has been displayed in recent exhibitions around the world. Most notably in June 2023, the poster was on display at the first ever Tolerance Poster Show exhibition in West Africa, hosted in Accra Ghana, & also at the most recent showing in February 2024 in Osu, Accra.
