We were approached by the acquisition team of Alerics, a nostalgic ice cream brand established in the 1940’s in Sri Lanka, to revive the brand for modern day. Having lived and worked in Australia for many years, original founder, Aleric De Silva Wimalarathne decided on his return to Sri Lanka to use all of his knowledge gained overseas to establish an island based ice cream company, and the brand was well-loved throughout the following decades. However, eventually the brand at the time could not compete with the newer, larger brands that flooded the market and eventually it fell out of favour.

We all know that nostalgia plays a huge part in connecting people to brands, and a fresh acquisition injected a new lease of life into the brand and people were instantly excited and surprised to hear it was soon to make a comeback.

We knew we had to do the brand justice, and wanted to create a modern feel but with a nod to those days gone by and so we looked into retro ice cream stalls & diners, found archival imagery of the original store that was THE place to hang out in 1960’s Colombo and researched retro ice cream packaging to design a tub that would connect with both the original Alerics audience (40+), and a new wave of youthful customers inspired by the fun flavours and colourful tubs.

The outcome is a playful range of colours, with both bold typography underpinned by retro fonts, and each flavour has a custom illustration with a vintage feel in line with those found on the walls of ice cream parlours and diners.
