This is a research project reiterating the story of queen Cleopatra and celebrating her famous bath rituals through skincare products for this generation.
Cleopatra is considered to be an iconic mark of beauty. She nurtured her body with pure and natural products which are mentioned in her cosmetic book entitled Cleopatra gynaeciarum libri, an extant book that was referred to as late as the 7th century by Paulus of Aegina.
She established an elaborate laboratory and cosmetic workshop, En Bouquet, dedicated to researching herbs, creating perfumes and medicinal ointments. The workshop comprised of thermal springs, bathing and massaging rooms for her and the royals of Ptolemaic kingdom. One of the ingredient found in her factory was the Dead sea mud, also called as Pitch of Judaea, is still used as a skin treatment in modern cosmetics and skincare products.
En Bouquet, is a skincare and cosmetic brand for Gen Z, inspired by all the natural ingredients used at her workshop.
The product concepts are based on Cleopatra’s beauty regime. They are given magical names to add humor and mystery. There are four main product categories – bath, skincare, haircare and perfumes. Each product in these categories is unisex and has a unique color palette derived from the ancient ingredients used in them. For example, Juniper berries, Moringa, Henna leaves. To add to the story, there are some interesting legends printed on each product, which were discovered during this research. Cleopatra prepared a paste made of ground horse teeth and deer marrow to cure Julius Caesar’s baldness.
The colorful fluid patterns on the packaging celebrate the brand’s vision. They are painted digitally. Type is a combination of serif and sans serif, Mrs. Eaves and Bilo. The logotype, En Bouquet is bold and geometric in order to add contrast to the patterns. The final prototype is printed on Neenah paper.
