“Stealing Fire From the Gods” explores the profound implications of artificial intelligence (AI) through the lens of mythology, particularly drawing parallels between AI and the ancient tale of Prometheus. As Prometheus once defied the gods by stealing fire to bestow knowledge and power upon humanity, AI today stands at a similar precipice—unlocking vast potentials while posing significant risks. This project, driven by deep research into both the historical origins and the present state of AI development, seeks to explore these dualities by engaging in critical discussions led by eight artists, each contributing unique perspectives on what AI might mean for the future of humanity.
The idea behind the project stems from a recognition that in our rapidly advancing age of AI, machines are learning and evolving at an unprecedented rate. This swift progression can sometimes obscure the timeless narratives that have long guided human understanding of innovation and its consequences. By framing AI as a modern-day Prometheus, this project invites viewers to reconsider the ancient myth through a contemporary lens—where knowledge and wisdom, like fire, can both illuminate and burn, depending on how they are wielded.
The approach to this exploration is reflected not only in the content but also in the design and structure of the book. The typography system itself becomes a narrative tool, transitioning from stability and singularity to flexibility and diversity. This typographic evolution mirrors the unpredictable and multifaceted nature of AI, offering readers new emotional and visual experiences that deepen their understanding of the topic. The book is divided into four main sections—”Origin,” “Singularity,” “New Dark Age,” and “Exhibition”—each designed to take the reader on a journey from recognition and understanding to reflection and critique of the AI era.
“Origin” delves into the roots of AI, tracing its development and connecting it to the Promethean myth. “Singularity” explores the pivotal moments when AI begins to surpass human capabilities, while “New Dark Age” contemplates the potential dangers and ethical dilemmas that arise as AI continues to evolve. Finally, “Exhibition” presents the culmination of these ideas through the works of the eight participating artists, offering a visual and intellectual synthesis of the themes discussed.
This structure not only guides the audience through the complexities of AI but also invites them to engage in ongoing contemplation, leaving the conclusion open-ended. By doing so, “Stealing Fire From the Gods” aims to spark a conversation about the future of humanity in the age of artificial intelligence—challenging us to consider how we might harness this new “fire” with wisdom and care.
