Shuffle Magazine Graphic Design for Publication

Shuffle Magazine is a publication, presented by Spotify, that is intended to be a deeper dive and inner look into the music, podcast and video streaming giant’s world. Articles feature topics ranging from Spotify news updates, artist interviews, music from cultures around the world, podcast news, Spotify initiatives, environmental stewardship, top music charts and more. This brand extension is meant to take advantage of the recent popularity of independent print publishing and give users of the digital-based brand a format that is more slow paced and thoughtful.

I aimed to translate Spotify’s already unique and adaptable style into the magazine while also tailoring each spread to speak stylistically to the artist it covered. The name “Shuffle,” a reference to the randomize feature available on music players, is represented by a dynamic icon logo. This logo is used large on covers, giving the publication a dynamic quality. Co-branding with the Spotify logo is kept subtle, pushing attention mostly to the artists and other content. Photography is diverse and playful, giving the featured artist the ability to express their own personality.

The magazine includes a “Shuffle” tab, an indent starting at the table of contents gives the user the option to “shuffle” around to different articles, creating a fun and unique way to browse, similar to how a user might “shuffle” their playlists. Interior layouts feature bold design with special display typefaces used for individual articles. Artists’ personalities are highlighted through large photography, but with conceptual twists and modifications that make imagery extra compelling.

The magazine sub-brand also has a digital version which includes animated and interactive articles to help content come to life. This website also helps promote the print magazine through digital and social campaigns.
