How can a type foundry package their digital fonts, as something that can be physically sold in todays times, in order to make it more accessible to designers, and at the same time serve a greater purpose?
Type for Change is an initiative by Zetafonts type foundry, to promote and humanise their typefaces by presenting them in a way that is engaging & relevant in today’s society. The concept revolves around addressing social issues by drawing parallels to typography. The project consists of special addition accessories that relate to particular causes- Body positivity / Inclusivity & diversity / Gender equality & fluidity. The accessories include T-shirts, sweatshirt, enamel pins, posters etc.
By purchasing the merchandise, designers get access to a few weights of the Zetafonts typeface used in the design. In this way, the merchandise itself serves as the package for the fonts used.
The idea behind this, was to make good quality typefaces more accessible to young, independent designers in the industry and also to contribute towards spreading awareness about the issues faced in our society. The designers are also prompted to create artworks for the social cause that they support using these typefaces.
The packaging of the products was designed keeping in mind the basic idea of promoting change in the society. The design features a variable logo system of ‘Type for Change’ and different kinds ‘Z’s’ that change with each mailer. Inside, the products are wrapped in plain black tissue that is held together by custom designed duct-tape featuring different glyphs.
Website: The original Zetafonts website with will provide a link to an e-commerce website for Type for Change, where the products and corresponding typefaces can be purchased. The website also includes an interactive section, that enables you to create designs using the online T-shirt generator. Users have an option to use the manual or the sensor mode. The camera sensor mode, uses real-time hand gesture recognition with Media-Pipe technology, that lets the user create using only hand signals.
