Seeing Sound Graphic Design for Periodical Publication

Experience music in a whole new way with Seeing Sound, the mesmerizing visual album magazine that translates sound into breathtaking visual masterpieces.

Overview
Seeing Sound is an independent magazine that seeks to have readers experience music through a showcase of visual albums. The challenge of creating a visual, printed piece, that translates the experience of sound. The magazine targets an audience of music and art lovers, ages 20–34.

Identity
The magazine has a dark, counterculture aesthetic that always pushes variety and edge. The magazine’s custom logotype uses wonky letters, which convey the melting feeling of engaging with music. The logo is outlined in white, so that it can sit on top of vibrant imagery on the covers while maintaining its readability. The logo also has a dynamic version, where images of sound and sensory objects take place of the ‘O.’ These images are expanded in various brand applications to overlap with messaging. Cover imagery blends album and musician art with conceptual modifications and typography for a unique and creative look that is tailored to the aesthetic and mood of each featured artist.

Interiors
The magazine interior makes use of the Druk typeface family for its extreme width and weights, adding visual punch and energy to headlines. This is paired with monospace typography, which contributes to the punk aesthetic. Body copy is set in a simple sans serif, for a utilitarian look. Scribbles and annotations are layered throughout the imagery and headlines in the magazine to create visual interest and to ensure articles always feel imperfect and varied. Photos are heavily treated and modified for conceptual play. This helps ensure that each article has its own look, and that content never feels stale. The magazine uses ample white space and bold typographic contrast, enabled by its flexible grid system.
