Rowena Huanga Elevates Out Of Sight With A Powerful Historical Perspective

Rowena Huanga Elevates Out Of Sight With A Powerful Historical Perspective

In the 1800s, over 17,000 Chinese men arrived in Canada to work on the Canadian Pacific Railway. During that time, they were utilized to build the most dangerous areas of the track resulting in approximately 700 deaths. Following the completion of the railway, many wanted to settle and bring their families, only to be met with the several discriminatory acts that prohibited immigration strictly due to race. It reflected decades of time within Canadian history where Chinese people were viewed as less than, unimportant, and negligible.

“Out of Sight” is a proposed exhibition that will be displayed at the Museum of Vancouver. Showcasing the raw truth of these Chinese railroad workers, the exhibition illustrates the harsh, unfair, and often life-threatening situations these men faced daily. It examines the juxtapositions between a country exploiting Chinese workers for a nation-binding railway line and the hateful discrimination that came before, during, and after.

The brand is inspired by vintage photography, overprint text, and the fusion of the English and Chinese language. The presentation of the exhibition is rooted in a perspective of providing historical facts from a human lens. Divided into three sections, the exhibition describes their experience in full: the Journey, the Struggle, and the Aftermath. Each section takes a historical fact and frames it from the Chinese perspective, creating an emotional impact through restructuring a narrative that had previously pushed Chinese Canadians out of sight.
