Ri-tratto Rosso: Celebrating 100 Years of Federico Fellini’s Legacy

Ri-tratto Rosso: Celebrating 100 Years of Federico Fellini’s Legacy

“To celebrate the centenary of Federico Fellini’s birth, a remarkable exhibition was conceived to capture glimpses of his life in the iconic Cinecittà studios: Ri-tratto Rosso. This ambitious project, a collaboration between Cappelli Identity Design, Istituto Luce Cinecittà and the Elisabetta Catalano Archive, resulted in an immersive experience that transported visitors into the fascinating world of the legendary filmmaker. The chosen venue, Teatro1, provided a canvas for innovation and imagination. Towering monoliths, reaching a staggering 12 meters in height, dominated the space. White panels cascaded down from the ceiling, responding to the gentle movements of passing visitors. This dynamic interplay of elements created an ever-changing landscape where perspectives intertwined and hidden depths beckoned from every corner.

Emanuele Cappelli, designer and founder of Cappelli Identity Design studio, was inspired by the poignant portraits of Elisabetta Catalano. In these timeless images, he found echoes of a bygone era, fueling his determination to recreate the magic of Fellini’s world.

As a tribute to Fellini’s enduring legacy, Cappelli Identity Design used Felliniana Type in the exhibition, a typeface inspired by the master’s own handwriting. Crafted with care and reverence, each letter embodies the fluidity and charisma of Fellini’s script, capturing the essence of his artistic spirit.

At once an exhibition and a book, Ri-tratto Rosso serves as a testament to Fellini’s indelible mark on cinematic history. Through the lens of Elisabetta Catalano, his original vision is immortalised, offering a glimpse into the golden age of La Dolce Vita. Visitors embark on a journey through Fellini’s psyche. Guided by a subtle interplay of light and sound, they witness a fusion of reality and fantasy, a testament to the enduring appeal of Fellini’s cinematic universe. As the curtain falls on this enchanting exhibition, one cannot help but feel a sense of gratitude – for the opportunity to peer into the soul of a master, and for the enduring legacy that continues to inspire generations of artists.”
