Raiine Draws Inspiration From Art Nouveau and Vintage Perfumery

Out of a desire to create a brand that captured natural beauty, RAIINE was born. As a line of skincare products, RAIINE uses traditional perfumery and distillation methods utilizing 100% natural and organic ingredients. While the products are primarily marketed for skincare, they are fragrant and almost perfume-like.

The initial concept was formed around photographs the founders had taken of flowers behind a pane of glass covered in rain. Initially, the design intent was to place sticker labels with the founders’ photographs on the backside of the bottle so that the photographs showed through to the front.

The design team faced challenges with the initial approach. Ingredients in the serum and toner naturally darkened and became more opaque with time, causing the design on the back pane of the bottle to become obscured and illegible.

Naturally, the design evolved to become a more abstracted take on the initial concept. One of the founders developed a set of custom, hand-painted watercolors. Each which would eventually correspond with a specific product.

This approach honors the initial concept of flowers and rain, but is more symbolic — playing off of the idea of flowers being left out in the rain with the natural pigments bleeding into the paper.

To tie the packaging design to the bottle, a label sticker with watercolor texture was chosen for the bottle itself.

In the creative brief, the founders desired a typographic logo that was unlike many beauty products currently on the market; often defined by sans serif typefaces and a minimalist design aesthetic.

The designer developed a custom typographic logo as well as a symbolic icon, drawing inspiration from traditional perfumery and Art Nouveau’s free-flowing natural forms, which are often characterized by dramatic variations between thin and thick line work.

The final result is a unique line of skincare products that pay homage to the rich history of perfumery, realized by a defining and symbolic concept.
