Destilería Andina emerged as a concept in the Sacred Valley of Cusco (Peru) around 1983, with a flagship beverage: Matacuy, a traditional Andean elixir also considered medicinal. Over time, and with the ambition to professionalize the production of “cañazo”, the company began to expand its offer, which increased the complexity of its communication and branding needs. That path brought them to us.
Salqa (“untamed” in quechua) was born as the brand for their family of young and aged spirits. Its bottle was designed and crafted from recycled glass by Peruvian artist Ishmael Randall-Weeks. For its label, we developed a typography based on the windows of the Ollantaytambo complex and an illustration featuring the animals of the sacred Andean trilogy—the condor, the puma, and the snake. A visual identity that captures the wild nature of its name and its experimental spirit.
As beverages played a leading role in the rituals of ancient Andean cultures, we became involved in every element of the bottle. We even focused on the cork, where we placed a reduction of the drawing of the mythological trinity. The detail that crowns this association with mysticism is a golden seal with a kero, the quintessential ceremonial vessel.
