Marum is the ultimate sea-aged rum-based spirit, distilled according to traditions created by passionate master distillers over the past 350 years. Marum is a tribute to the Sea Battle of Sylt in 1644 between Sweden and Denmark.
It is a Caribbean distillate that is refined to perfection on the coast of Sylt. Its unique flavour profile is obtained from a special molasses that is second to none. Only a handful of distilleries are able to create such an impressive work of art. Castenschiold has discovered this masterpiece and brought it to Sylt. This is where tradition and class, the Caribbean and the North Sea, craftsmanship and modernity come together.
Jørgen, the forefather of the Castenschiold family, was born on the Kielseng farm near Flensburg, Germany in 1678. Jørgen arrived in St Thomas in 1694 and began working for the Danish Vestindisk Kompagni as a ‘botteler’. During the tenure of his uncle, the governor of St Thomas, the first barrels of the precursor of rum, Killdevil, were exported to Europe. Through the purchase of the Mosquito Bay plantation and other fortunate decisions, Jørgen’s son Johan Lorentz consolidated the family’s lasting influence in the sugar and rum business.
