Oblique Strategies. Brian Eno Exhibition Identity

Oblique Strategies. Brian Eno Exhibition Identity

Exhibition Oblique Strategies is dedicated to the personality of Brian Eno and his multifaceted work. Brian Eno is a British musician, composer, record producer and visual artist who is mostly famous in the music industry for his contributions to ambient music and work in rock, pop and electronica genres. A self-described “non-musician”, Brian has helped to introduce unconventional concepts and approaches to contemporary music.

The exposition includes sound and light installations, works in the genre of video art, generative works, and also tells about the biography of the founder of ambient music and a significant figure in the world of music.

Visual identity is based on the Oblique Strategy accidental typeface which was inspired by Brian Eno. The name of the typeface is a reference to the Oblique Strategies – card method created by Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt in 1975. Pointer cards help musicians or other artists to look at their work from a different angle if they face various difficulties in their creative process. The slope of the strokes in the font – the same “oblique” strategy.

Typeface was based on the generative principle of creating music which involves the reduction of several sound recordings of different duration into a single composition, within which they can be repeated at different intervals. This principle was used by Brian Eno to create classic ambient albums.

Oblique Strategies typeface includes Cyrillic and Latin bases with a set of basic symbols and numbers. To support the generative idea behind Brian Eno’s music methods, a noisier alternative Latin base with more elements was also created.

The visuals are also based on the visual design of Brian Eno’s work, which uses perpendicular lines and a circle motif. Graphics are layered on layouts, creating generative patterns which are similar to Eno’s generative approach.
