Mon Kooloor is a youthful, urban pastry and café that specialises in baking different versions of a beloved, traditional Greek product: the koulouri. With its deep roots in Thessaloniki and its association with childhood memories and street vendors, the koulouri holds a special place, mainly as breakfast, in Greek hearts. Our challenge was to take this tradition and infuse it with modern, youthful energy, giving this iconic product a new voice that resonates with today’s urban lifestyle.
We began by embracing the product’s round, sesame-coated form and transforming it into a symbol. The circular shape of the koulouri naturally lent itself to becoming a canvas for our design. We enhanced the logo with the playful and ubiquitous pop icon of our time: the emoji. This symbol, already deeply embedded in our digital interactions, allowed us to marry the warmth of tradition with the vitality of youth. The result is a logo that is immediately familiar yet fresh, fluid, and ever-changing—appealing not only to a younger audience but also to the young at heart. The colours and typeface radiate the energy of a vibrant, urban lifestyle.
The packaging, with its vibrant, animated characters, speaks to this modern language. Each bag, box, and cup become part of a broader narrative—a small yet powerful story that unfolds with every koulouri purchased. The whimsical designs invite customers to pause amid the city’s frantic pace, connecting with the product on an emotional level—not just as a snack, but as a companion to life’s everyday moments.
Our approach to store design followed the same philosophy. We envisioned Mon Kooloor as more than just a bakery; we wanted it to be a place of pause, where the rush of the city meets the warmth of comfort food. The display of koulouria reflects this balance, blending traditional elements like wooden textures and natural lighting with bold, expressive visuals. The result is a space that feels like a breath of fresh air, inviting customers to step in, smile, and restart their day.
At every step—from corporate identity to packaging and store design—our goal was to make Mon Kooloor a destination where tradition meets innovation, where the past and present intertwine in a celebration of taste, emotion, and design. Along the way, we even coined a new movement: “Pastryzation”—the right for each of us to their own unique type of koulouri. So, we proudly say: “Ney to Globalisation, yey to Pastryzation.”
