Coala Papéis is a company from the Northeastern region of Brazil that manufactures sanitary products and, since 2021, has been offering bags for the packaging of domestic waste. This project encompasses the development of new packaging for bags of 15L, 30L, 50L, 100L and 200L to be featured at supermarkets throughout the Northeast.

The briefing asked for a flow-pack plastic foil. The design should be concentrated on one side and be printed only on the front. The packaging is produced via a flexographic process.

The packaging design has a layout composed of predominantly organic lines and forms, connecting their style to the product’s nature and function, which is the pragmatic and efficient disposal of mostly organic domestic waste. Therefore, form and function are perfectly aligned throughout the packaging design.

The strategy and choice of blue as the main colour, since it is directly related to the concept of cleaning, detaches the product from the idea of something dirty or unwholesome. At the same time, it reinforces the connection with its function, which is to clean or purify and, besides the casual aspect that the vibrant colours give to the packaging, they also work as a visual element of differentiation between the product variations, making their identification easier.

In order to make the identification of the product variation as easy and fast as possible, different colours were applied to specific elements that have a connection or show the product’s characteristics, such as the bag size, quantity and capacity. The customer experience is greatly streamlined by these subtle, yet effective, changes.

As a result, the organic design and bright colours that compose the layout bring to the packaging a casual, vibrant and attractive aspect which, at the same time, reinforces the idea of something clean and dynamic. The close alignment of the packaging’s aesthetics with the product’s function brings a sense of unity and cohesiveness to the project that further promotes its most attractive features.
