London-based, strategy-led design studio Blond has designed an elegant, sleek case and matching tray for disruptive deodorant brand Fussy. The deodorant is refillable and shaped like a pebble, referencing the longevity and sustainability inherent in the product itself. Fussy launches during June 2021 after a successful Kickstarter campaign.
“There are several refillable deodorants on the market,” explains Blond Founder and Creative Director, James Melia. “They all fight for a righteous cause: a world with less single-use plastics. However, when Fussy approached us in February 2020, we felt there was still an opportunity to create a better and more sustainable offering.”
Blond designed a hard-wearing case, with increased wall thickness and sturdy mechanisms to ensure longevity. Following extensive research, recycled plastic was chosen above bio-composites or bioplastics, as this material is easier to recycle. Melia intentionally chose a single material for all component parts, allowing the entire product to be recycled or composted in full, without being disassembled.
The naturally ergonomic form of the deodorant case gives the product a premium aesthetic. It was designed to fit perfectly in the hand and blend seamlessly with the user’s lifestyle, whether at home, in the pocket, at work or in a gym bag. A
matt finish was chosen as a nod to homeware and ceramics that are used every day. This will gradually take on a patina, becoming more worn and beautiful over time like a pebble you might find on a beach.
The size and design of the case and its cradle, the Deo Dish, were determined by the business model behind Fussy deodorant; the refills and the case need to fit through UK letterboxes as part of the subscription nature of the business.
