Kotre Theater Brand Identity Concept by Julia Novikova

Kotre is one of the few theaters in Moscow that practices productions with the participation of cats and is aimed at adult and adolescent audiences. This is a special kind of experimental theater that does not equate itself with either a circus or a classical theater. The theater’s repertoire includes both adaptations of books about cats and author’s productions in which furry friends play roles on a par with people. For example, in the play Kysya the cat plays the main role, and people help her in this monologue performance.
The idea of the corporate identity is animation with a barrier grid that literally visualizes a theatrical performance. The stripes as the basis of the corporate identity were not chosen by chance – they were borrowed from one of the most common colors of cats – gray with black stripes. Stripes break up any image and even font into composite objects that stop in static graphics and come to life when the stripes move. Thanks to this technique, the style begins to show pieces of the presentation to the viewer even before he comes to the theater, on any media. This technique runs through the entire identity, including the logo and the accidental font, inside which several typefaces change during animation. Such variability emphasizes the constant changes taking place in the theater, emphasizes that the theater is constantly developing, is looking for its own unique new theatrical language and is constantly experimenting with the form of productions. The main color scheme of the style is contrasting monochrome colors: white and black. The main additional color is lilac, but it can also be any other color that will best complement and reveal the essence of a certain statement.
