Kingdom & Sparrow’s Identity and Packaging Design for Again: a Sustainable Brand for Premium Chocolate Retail

Kingdom & Sparrow’s Identity and Packaging Design for Again: a Sustainable Brand for Premium Chocolate Retail

Chocolarder are a luxury, sustainable bean-to-bar chocolate maker based in Falmouth; they are one of the larger bean to bar producers in the UK. Chocolarder are passionate about the planet and their ethical credentials stand out among their competitors. From using minimal ingredients to choosing plastic-free packaging, sustainability impacts every decision they make, to create their world-class chocolate.

We worked with Chocolarder on their core brand in 2018, and varying packaging projects since. They recently returned to Kingdom & Sparrow for a new range extension, repurposing food waste into chocolate.

‘Again’ features three new bar flavours using food that would have otherwise been discarded, to help raise awareness and tackle the huge food waste problem within their industry. They want to show that things considered waste to some, can simply be repurposed by another – it’s about circular economy thinking.

The brief was to create a packaging design using paper stock that would appeal to a younger generation who are environmentally aware and sustainability focused. In contrast to their core range, we chose a vibrant and playful colour palette to dial up the sense of flavour and to stand up against the vibrant chocolate brands featuring on the shelf in high-end retail. We used a collage approach to emphasise the idea of reusing waste to create something beautiful, while the energy of a circular layout creates movement and reflects the cyclical production process.

For the wordmark, we created a bespoke logotype which echoes the papercut collage aesthetic, while the flavour variant’s hand lettered style compliments with a feeling of spontaneity. Capitalising on the double-sided print of the paper wrap, with the aim of educating the consumer, the inner includes facts about food waste that can be discovered on opening.

The results

Chocolarder’s aim was to sell into high-end retail and we’re pleased to share that Again launched straight into Selfridges, following a successful exhibition at the 2024 Northwest Chocolate Festival, held in Seattle.
