To celebrate L’Oréal’s 115 years, Colorsonic, the next generation of at-home hair color, was launched in 2024. L’Oréal Colorsonic is the first haircolor device of its kind. It makes hair color easier by automatically mixing and depositing formula right at the root delivering long-lasting salon-like hair color at home.
We were tasked with designing the packaging for all aspects of this stunning innovation, from the device itself to the hair color cartridges, the conditioning tube and the instruction sheet.
We began with a creative territory that we called ‘at the press of a button’. It was all about the beautiful simplicity of this lifestyle technology. The territory influenced the effortless aesthetic, the copy writing around the pack, and the sophisticated and informative wire-frame illustration style.
One of the most challenging aspects of the project was the innovative three-dimensional design required to neatly package all elements that come with the device itself. We came up with the idea of a thermoform pulp tray that could display everything neatly for easy storage re-use at home. After planning out the perfect way to pack the items we developed technical data for the manufacturing. Our idea was that the device should be visible even when the box is closed to help shoppers at point of sale.
Along with the device, Colorsonic brings L’Oreal Paris’s first multi-usage hair color cartridge – what you don’t use, you can save for the next time. The palette of over 20 expertly crafted shades is free of ammonia, silicones, parabens, and phthalates. Always full of shine, hydration, and conditioning. We created an easy-to-navigate packaging system using hair swatches that could be displayed economically. Just by seeing the tip of the carton, the shopper can find their shade effortlessly. The boxes also show a results guide, so you can see how the colour will affect your hair type.
Inside the box, we designed a comprehensive set of instructions with infographics to make using the device at home easy. The instruction sheet is made from a fabric that can be wiped clean and re-used again and again.
The best color of your life is now as easy as brushing your hair. You just press a button, and Colorsonic does the rest.
