Currently offering 24 unique varieties, Black Crow White Pigeon is a brand crafted exclusively for specialty coffees. Specialty coffee appeals to those who seek more than just a routine pick-me-up: it promotes appreciation of the exceptional quality, the surprising depth, and the singular story hidden behind each cup. Coffee of this kind offers a sensory journey that connects its drinkers to the distinct character of every single bean.

Task
Our task was to develop a brand and packaging that would encapsulate the essence of Black Crow White Pigeon, focusing on the three core attributes:

Sophistication: Highlighting the quality and exclusivity of the product.
Discovery: Evoking the anticipation of a unique and captivating taste experience.
Originality: Showcasing the distinctive stories and characteristics behind each coffee.

Creative Solution: Brand
The name “Black Crow White Pigeon” was born out of an effort to connect the polar opposites of the specialty coffee flavour spectrum: from light, delicate aromas to rich, mysterious, dark notes. Much like different colours, the flavours of specialty coffee can thus be said to stretch between the poles of white and black.

The brand name is unique, striking, and unexpected. With no immediate reference to coffee, it sparks curiosity, drawing the consumers in and encouraging them to uncover the story behind it. Conveniently, the name also suggests that there will be specific characters involved in the story at hand—these are the Black Crow and the White Pigeon.

To enhance the storytelling aspect, we devised a numbering system for the packaging. Each number symbolises a unique “chapter” in the brand’s story, inviting customers to explore and experience each individual flavour profile.

The logo features two feathers—one black, one white—arranged in a crown-like design, complemented by a bookish font that spells out the words Black Crow White Pigeon.

The slogan—“Extraordinary coffee stories”—reinforces the brand’s dedication to offering not just coffee, but rather an exclusive taste experience.”

Creative Solution: Packaging
The packaging reflects the brand’s premium quality and embodies the unique story of each single coffee. Light, fruity, floral coffees are packaged in white bags featuring a pigeon, while rich, bold varieties with notes of chocolate, nuts, or wine are presented in black bags with a crow on them.

We use high-quality materials with a matte finish, accentuated by luxurious silver detailing on the logo, the feathers, and the quotation marks on the side. The flat-bottom structure adds elegance and stability to the design, creating a clean, sophisticated aesthetic that encourages customers to focus on the coffee. The storytelling aspect is supported by a quote from one of the characters (the Black Crow or the White Pigeon) printed on the side, reminiscent of an epigraph at the beginning of a book.

Each package is marked by a number in the background, both representing a specific “chapter” in the story of the brand, and providing an easy way for customers to memorise their favourite coffee. While the overall design remains strictly black and white, these numbers serve as easily recognisable elements, helping consumers quickly find their preferred coffee on the shelf.

The combination of the above elements results in packaging that exudes a sophisticated charm, inviting customers to set out on an extraordinary coffee journey of their own.”
