Identity of the Moscow festival “Railway Opera”

Identity of the Moscow festival “Railway Opera”

Railway Opera is a festival in which singers perform on train platforms or in a train station building. Opera is a high art that requires immersion, while the railway station, on the contrary, is a place where bustle reigns and every minute counts. How to connect two so different worlds?

The project is based on the score of an opera part with words decomposed into syllables, along which trains drive around like on rails. On different media, you can see station scenes – passengers hurrying to the train, a passing freight train, various platforms and station buildings.

An important task for me was to visually connect the two concepts “opera” and “station”. I found the solution in a bright illustration that goes on top of strict notes and calm typography. Little people crowd in anticipation of boarding, different passenger and freight trains arrive on different platforms, railway stations and aprons change. All these scenes create a sense of movement, bustle and imbue the identity with the feeling of a station.

The entire identity system is very flexible. It can be applied to a variety of media, including posters, banners and tickets, and various souvenirs such as T-shirts or cloth bags. Visitors are surrounded by the festival’s identity, even when they decide to have a bite, they are offered branded cups and even branded sugar.

All typography in the project is divided into syllables, like operatic parts. This creates a recognizable character and adds an unusual rhythm. All basic information is printed on this principle, and additional information can be added below in a smaller text size. This principle allows you to focus on the most important, highlight the most necessary, for example, the name of the festival, the venue of the performance, the name of the opera, which will be performed by famous singers, as well as the time and date of the concert.
