Identity for the Gastrobar “Sailor’s Tears” by Student Ekaterina Bobrova

“Sailor’s Tears” is a gastropub located on the sea coast next to the yacht club. Here you can drink various fine alcoholic drinks, as well as try dishes with seafood. One of the features of this establishment is musical evenings, where visitors can listen to sea songs, dance, fully immerse themselves and feel the atmosphere of sea life.

The corporate graphics were created using ink diluted with water, and to create smudges, the sheet on which the image was applied was hung vertically on an easel. The graphics imitate the style of abstract expressionism and refer to the works of the American artist Cy Twombly.

The identity is based on images of anchors, different in their shape. This image was chosen because it will be understandable to both sailors and people who are not familiar with maritime affairs. The use of anchors made in the style of abstract expressionism allows us to create a flexible system of graphic elements that can be scaled on different media and perceived differently – the sign will be clearly read, for example, on dishes, or will disappear and work as some abstract emotional graphics, for example, on posters.

All communication in the identity is aimed at romanticizing the marine lifestyle. Marine life is very emotional, dramatic, filled with both sadness and sorrow, and exciting adventures, so it was very important to reflect this in the communication. The use of emotional graphics in their nature works to convey this mood, in which smudges, streaks of paint and a watery texture generally imitate tears, a splash of emotion and water at the same time. The use of sea song lyrics and quotes on different media also helped make the communication more dramatic.
