Higgie’s Pet Mercantile Branding by Grant Creates a Warm Community Driven Identity for Modern Pet Retail

Crafting a Pet Brand That Feels Like Home

In a crowded pet retail landscape, where brands often lean heavily on either clinical wellness or playful indulgence, Higgie’s Pet Mercantile strikes a rare balance: warm, nostalgic, and deeply rooted in care. The result is a brand that doesn’t just serve pet owners; it welcomes them in like family.

When Higgie’s first set out, they weren’t just looking for a logo or a colour palette—they needed a name and identity that could capture the emotional bond between pets and their people. The solution came from an unexpected place: mythology. Inspired by Hygeia, the Greek goddess of health, the name “Higgie’s” was born. It’s a subtle nod to wellness, wrapped in the kind of affectionate nickname you might give your own pet: instantly familiar, approachable, and full of charm.

From there, the brand identity took shape as a thoughtful blend of old-world warmth and modern sensibility. Drawing visual cues from classic Italian markets and family-run eateries, the design leans into a sense of tradition, quality, and community. It’s the kind of place where you imagine being greeted by name, and where the experience feels just as nourishing as the products themselves.

A standout feature of the brand is its illustration system. Playful and hand-drawn, the artwork introduces a layer of personality that feels both whimsical and intentional. Hidden within these illustrations are subtle references to Hygeia, including her iconic serpent—an unexpected detail that adds depth and a hint of edge to an otherwise cozy aesthetic. It’s a smart juxtaposition that reinforces the brand’s commitment to health without sacrificing character.

Beyond the visual identity, the brand experience extends seamlessly across every touchpoint. The Shopify website was designed to echo the same warmth and accessibility as the physical space, supported by a suite of digital and social assets that maintain consistency while allowing for flexibility. In-store signage invites customers in with an ease that feels natural, not forced, like stepping into a neighbourhood staple you’ve known for years.

Even the merchandise plays a role in building community. Designed with the same care as the core brand elements, Higgie’s merch gives pet parents a way to express their love and loyalty, turning customers into ambassadors.

To round it all out, in-house lifestyle and still-life photography captures the brand in its truest form: fresh, wholesome, and full of personality. These images tell a story of connection, care, and everyday joy.

Higgie’s Pet Mercantile is more than a pet store, it’s a feeling. One rooted in health, built on community, and delivered with a wink of personality. Like any good family gathering, it’s a place you’ll want to come back to, again and again (even without the unlimited breadsticks).
