My thesis project focused on the redesign of the Fuga Budapest Center of Architecture. Fuga is a prominent cultural institution that encompasses various fields of culture, with architecture playing a central role. Its mission is to strengthen the relationship between architecture and different branches of arts. The institution serves as a bridge between architecture and other artistic disciplines, such as fine arts, music, theater, science, and film, fostering dialogue through lectures and events. Its goal is to make architecture accessible to the general public and provide a multifaceted experience to its visitors. Fuga plays a crucial role in promoting architectural discourse and maintaining the relationship between the public and architecture within a diverse, interdisciplinary cultural space.
The concept behind the rebranding was based on the relationship between different spaces. The first step was to define the notion of space: the objective of architecture, from both a practical and artistic standpoint is the creation of space. Space is formed through the manipulation of materials, becoming architectural space when enclosed by walls, ceilings, and other built elements. In essence, space itself is “empty,” only defined by the material boundaries that surrounds it. Following this, I examined geometry, which is an indispensable element of architecture. Geometrical shapes evoke order, stability, and timelessness, and appear across all branches of art. Among these shapes, I selected the cube as the foundational form, as it is the only regular shape that can fully occupy space. I began placing and truncating these cubes, creating three-dimensional spaces. I represented this via using an axonometric system. Axonometry was chosen for its ability to depict spatial objects in two dimensions. These forms then became the basis for Fuga’s new visual identity, symbolizing the connection between different branches of arts.
The aim of the rebranding was to provide the center with a modern, fresh, and contemporary appearance. The visual refresh reflects Fuga’s role as a communal space and the relationship between architecture and various artistic disciplines. With my thesis project, I have developed a cohesive, thoughtful, and contemporary identity that faithfully represents Fuga’s mission and its role in Budapest’s cultural life.
