Fire In The Hole: The Plunderin’ Pirate Game

Fire In The Hole: The Plunderin’ Pirate Game

In early 2021, Dave and Julian of McMiller entertainment set out to create a category-busting tabletop party game that would offer everything from strategy to dexterity. Something that could be easily understood by kids, but enjoyed by adults alike. Something that was fully sustainable and 100% plastic free, and of course something that would send a title wave across the game and entertainment industry. Too much to ask? Not for McMiller!

When they approached Jim Kennelly about packaging design, the general concept and gameplay was in place, but they needed help bringing the visual identity to life. Dave and Julian wanted something with an elevated design style. Something that didn’t get lost in the sea of endless boardgames on the market and something that would break the mold of traditional tabletops games. The design challenge was to infuse the sense of excitement that comes from playing the game, while maintaining a certain level of simplicity in the overall design. Infuse a little Japanese Kawaii, sprinkle in some retro 60’s pop-art inspiration, and Fire in The Hole was born. Bold color, quirky illustrations, playful typography and of course some hidden treasure. The brand identity and packaging commands attention, and attention it will get. From the treasure map instructions to the pirate-themed Spotify playlist, the unboxing experience is meant to be immersive. To top it all off, the game centers around an impressive pop-up pirate ship and is 100% plastic-free, biodegradable, and carbon neutral, making it one of the most sustainable games on the market. Win.
