The SeedCoin is a university project that proposes a design solution for the incorrect disposal of electronic waste within the academic environment.
Electronic waste is a problem that tends to grow more and more due to the growing technological industry and the increasing production of electronic devices. However, we realize that many efforts have emerged to deal with it, both at the governmental and social levels, and we as an academy cannot help but contribute and generate solutions.
For this reason, this project proposed an intelligent and inexpensive solution for electronic waste in the academic context, using the resources available at the university, without generating additional costs, on the contrary, finding government and private incentives.
Concept:
We were looking for a nane that could have a direct relationship with sustainability and electronic waste. We chose SeedCoin. In free translation for portuguese, SeedCoin means seed currency.
The sound of SeedCoin is very similar to that of the word Bitcoin, which is the most well-known digital or cryptocurrency currency on the market today. The similarity in sonority will allow students to associate SeedCoin with the concept of virtual currency more easily, and its name directly refers to the cause for which it was created: resignifying the electronic waste.
The seed is the raw material of a new plant, and at the same time the end result of a fruit cycle. In ancient times, it was used as a currency exchanged between merchants, as payment, and as food. That is why we bet on it as an icon to represent recycling and sustainability;
We believe that SeedCoin in its essence can be summed up as “a light and intelligent way of thinking about recycling”. Therefore, we decided to create a light visual system, with illustrations, with colorful elements that connect with this community.
The idea is to create a sustainable system within the academic environment, involving everyone and inviting them to build the SeedCoin project together:
Students can work directly on developing the platform in exchange for scholarships, discounts or benefits. They also benefit from the use of the platform, being able to exchange their electronic waste for seeds, which are the units of the virtual currency of the project, and these for products or services necessary from the academic day-to-day.
The SeedCoin in practice: The students will bring electronic waste to the collection points that will be established on the university campus space and will receive a card which they will accumulate points with, called seeds.
They will also receive a login and password to join the SeedCoin app, where the users can consult their seed balances, find out how to get more points, what they can consume with these points or exchange them for courses, seminars, conferences, lectures, workshops, canteen discounts, and complementary hours.
