Elevating Primary Science Branding: Unveiling the Story of ‘That Science Lady’

Revamping Primary Science Brand Identity: Meet ‘That Science Lady’

Meet Kathryn Horan, AKA ‘That Science lady’ She is the founder of her business that goes by the same name. Kathryn, a former science teacher and award winning author who now offers CPD, Resources and Corporate sponsored learning in Primary schools, came to Finbo Studio to help her upgrade her branding.

The challenge she was facing was appealing to both science leads in primary schools and corporate sponsors, all while keeping kids at the heart – without appearing too childish or too corporate, and of course not wanting to sacrifice any of there personality in the process!

Our mission? Give ‘That Science Lady’ a brand makeover that would turn heads. We aimed to inject some excitement without going overboard on the kiddish stuff.

Here’s how we did it:

1. Discovery Phase: We looked deep into founder Kathryn’s insights and classroom experiences. We discovered that science teachers often get creative due to budget constraints, and we wanted to reflect that scrappy charm in a fun way.

2. Brand Strategy: We delved into the primary science curriculum to understand the landscape. Our strategy was to present familiar themes in a way that resonated with both teachers and corporates. We took inspiration from brands like ‘the life centre in Newcastle’ and ‘Oxford owl’ for their balance of fun and educational appeal.

3. Visual Identity Overhaul: Armed with research, we cooked up a full responsive suite of logos bursting with vibrant colours and playful typography. We incorporated key science themes like the water cycle and space to make the brand instantly recognisable to those who know and live the primary science curriculum.

Our colour palette was lively yet grounded in natural greens, and our typography was bold and easy to read.

We provided comprehensive guidelines for using the new brand elements, including tips for social media and website design.

Outcome: ‘That Science Lady’ emerged from her makeover looking fresh and fabulous. Her new look captured the attention of primary school science leads, corporate sponsors, and most importantly, the kids. With our help, she’s become the go-to person for primary science education, helping on her mission to inspire a whole generation of budding scientists and improve primary science education for all!
