Double Dragon was a pop-up restaurant in Clerkenwell, London created by Ex-Nobu Head Chef Scott Hallsworth – featuring a menu of unique Japanese small plates including some of Scott’s signature dishes. Named after the 1980’s video game, YellowFin created a distinctive brand based on pixelated game play with bold graphics and bright, vivid colours.
The small plate menu included many Japanese ingredients and cooking techniques which a lot of people in the UK hadn’t heard of, so we created a place mat called “Cheat Codes” which acted as a glossary of the more unusual terms and ingredients. With recruitment a challenge across the UK’s restaurant industry, the Cheat Codes also helped with staff training and cut down the amount of time waiting staff had to explain ingredients to people at their table. The Drinks List was designed like a video game eg Round 1 / Round 2 etc, this design also helped promote Sake Bombs, a signature drink the restaurant was famous for. The front cover was created with Double Dragon’s drinks in the background and characters from a game fighting at the front. The restaurant kept having to reprint this, as they became a very popular souvenir with customers to remember their meal by.
The bill folder continued the theme with pixelated graphics and “Game Over” written in bold on the front. A Saturday Brunch menu was added after the restaurant launch – so the promotional material was designed around the idea of a Bonus Level.
The fun, playful brand was the perfect reflection of the unique dishes and of the restaurant vibe – a loud, bustling Japanese Izakaya.
