This is a premium packaging project for organic olive oil that fuses design, sustainability, and tradition. Inspired by transhumance, an ancient practice that promotes biodiversity and environmental regeneration, this design aims to offer a functional, reusable, and visually striking container.
Design Concept: The bottle features a soft, organic shape that evokes the silhouette of a sheep, paying homage to the central symbol of transhumance. Its minimalist and clean design reflects the pure and sustainable essence of the product it contains, while the selected materials provide authenticity and environmental commitment.
Materials and Sustainability: The project stands out for its use of wool from transhumant sheep, hand-treated to create a unique fabric that wraps the base of the container. Currently, much of sheep wool ends up as waste due to its low demand in the textile industry. This project rescues this material, transforming it into a biodegradable and sustainable decorative element. The base of the container is made of hand-crafted, sustainably sourced wood, which adds warmth, durability, and an artisanal touch to the design.
Handcrafted Innovation: The wool fabric used is not a commercially available material, but rather a unique development for this project. The wool is treated manually, maintaining its natural texture and creating a finish that visually and tactilely simulates sheep fur. This innovation enhances a traditional resource, giving it a new lease of life and contributing to the circular economy.
Environmental Impact: “La Oveja” is committed to sustainability at every stage of its production. The use of wool, a renewable and biodegradable resource, reduces waste and supports transhumant livestock farming, essential for the preservation of natural ecosystems. The handcrafted wooden base minimizes the use of plastics and non-renewable materials, ensuring a low environmental impact.
End-of-Life Opportunity: The packaging has been designed to offer multiple opportunities at the end of its useful life. The wool can be reused in craft projects. The wooden base can be recycled or reused as a decorative element in the home, encouraging reuse and responsible consumption.
Cultural Relevance: This project not only promotes sustainable consumption but also preserves and raises awareness of transhumance, a millennia-old tradition in danger of disappearing. “La Oveja” is a tribute to the efforts of transhumant shepherds and a reminder that innovation and tradition can coexist to create a more sustainable future.
