Following the design of the logo, packaging, custom glass bottle, and tasting glasses for their core premium agave spirit, Maui-based Waikulu Distillery returned to CF Napa Brand Design to extend the design to their higher tier – Ohana Reserve.

Waikulu Distillery, uniquely positioned as the sole producer of Blue Agave Spirits in Hawaii, is nestled at an elevation of 1400 ft on the windward side of Maui. This location is blessed with mild temperatures and consistent rainfall, creating an idyllic environment for the growth of blue agave (Agave Tequilana). Waikulu is the only distillery in Hawaii producing Blue Agave Spirits. It began in 2011 as a novel experiment with a handful of plants, which flourished in the moist tropical climate and volcanic soils. The name “Waikulu” holds a deeper significance in Hawaiian culture. It translates to “dripping water,” a term historically used to describe alcohol spirits, which are produced through a slow, careful process of distillation that sees the liquid slowly dripping from the still.

The design for the Ohana Reserve needed to continued to feel true to traditional tequila packaging while maintaining an authentic Hawaiian sensibility. The design utilizes the custom glass bottle designed by CF Napa Brand Design. The variable pebble texture provided a handblown glass effect, reminiscent of the specialty bottles used by luxury tequila producers. The teal gradient in the glass transports the imbiber to the tropical oceans that surround the island of Maui where the distillery is located.

For Waikulu’s logo, CF Napa Brand Design drew an agave plant rising over the ocean, a symbol that was foiled in metallic blue on the front label to match the teal color of the glass container and was also molded into the glass. The black label gave a gravitas to the package, setting it apart from the cream labels utilized for the core spirits in the portfolio and serving as a hint to Ohana Reserve’s extremely high level of quality.
