Amaterasu is a project done in my free time to study branding design. This project was an opportunity to study illustration, graphic design and branding.
It’s a modern Japanese restaurant, with a global language. It was inspired in the idea of minimalist, modern restaurants from New York City. The look of the brand brings modernity, but the style of the food is traditional, honoring the Japanese cuisine.
The name “Amaterasu”came from the goddess of the sun in Japanese mythology. The main symbol of the brand is a minimalist and stylized illustration of a heron, an elegant bird often portrayed in Japanese art. In this symbol there is also a a reference to The Sun.
The illustrations are based on traditional art from the 19th century. The lotus flower is a very significant flower to Japan it means purity of the body, speech, and mind. All the design created for Amaterasu was really studied, I admire the japanese culture and with this project I wanted to pay homage combining the minimalist and elegant style of graphic design that I identify with.
The typography is light and tall to transmit the elegancy of the whole concept of Amaterasu. It’s like it was written with a feather pen, in the studies for the brand typography the idea was to united old aesthetics and new aesthetics. The brand has a sober color palette with black, blue, beige and gold creating a mood of a fancy restaurant. Amaterasu as whole brings an inspiring new perspective to Japanese restaurants and branding design for restaurants.
