Brand Design For Melsuu Restaurant

Melsúu is the branding for a restaurant in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico.

The brand pays tribute to the history and tradition of the Kiliwa, an ethnic group deeply rooted in the northern lands of Baja California, Mexico.

In the language of this people, melsúu means blue color.

The mark is a representation of the creator deity of the kiliwa mythology, Meltí, which symbolizes wisdom, magic and death.

Meltí means Coyote-People-Moon.

The brand and the system created for Melsúu tell the story of creation according to kiliwa mythology, showing the coyote and the moon as the protagonist, made in such a way that it looks like a pre-Hispanic engraving, the main color is blue giving emphasis to the name (Melsuu ) and is accompanied by an ocher color that represents the color of the earth, skin and mountains as part of the creation of Meltí.

The system that accompanies our brand draws the complete scene, the creation embodied in a desert.

One of the challenges was finding the perfect typeface for the brand, a hand-drawn typeface that at first glance appears to be written with a finger.

Taken together, the entire mark appears to have been derived from a cave painting etched by the native Kiliwa in the desert stones of Mexico’s northern border.

We also created some geometric patterns that balance the brand, between the organic and the aesthetic of the restaurant’s architecture.

We loved creating that mix of such diverse shapes, figures and textures, it is something that makes the brand tell a story of the past and not only make it present, but also revive a tribe and culture that is about to disappear and that each person that you visit the restaurant not only pamper the palate and get an exquisite taste in your mouth, but also have a complete experience fully enjoying the experience of the story that the brand tells them.
