Bocco d’Oro Pastry Ice Cream is a category-defining innovation: iconic Hungarian desserts reimagined as indulgent ice creams. Creamy, scoopable, yet layered with real pastry chunks, the product delivers a unique “half-pastry, half-ice cream” experience. This concept bridges culinary tradition with modern indulgence, appealing both to nostalgic consumers and younger audiences looking for something new. For Solid Agency, the challenge was to translate this duality into a packaging system that is not only visually engaging but also commercially effective in a highly competitive national retail environment. The design had to work across different freezer placements, secure strong brand recognition, and stand out in the cluttered impulse-buy segment.
Solution
Our approach was grounded in usage & attitude research and refined through focus group validation. This ensured that every visual decision was backed by consumer insight and tested for clarity and appeal. The key visual element is a stylized yet realistic wrap-around pastry illustration, designed to ensure 360° shelf visibility and instant recognition – even in disorganized freezer placements. Flavor differentiation is achieved through bold top-cap accents and color coding inspired by the desserts’ signature layers, making it easy for shoppers to identify their favorite. Classic serif typography reinforces a timeless, premium yet approachable character, creating a design language that communicates both quality and accessibility.
Result
The final packaging system successfully balances tradition and innovation, indulgent creaminess and biteable texture. Beyond aesthetics, it was conceived as a true business tool: driving impulse purchases, guaranteeing strong shelf presence, and supporting long-term brand equity. The solution was delivered within the resource constraints of a classic SME project, proving that research-driven creativity can deliver both emotional resonance and measurable commercial results. This case demonstrates how thoughtful packaging design can turn a niche product concept into a scalable retail success, holding its own against multinational competitors while retaining an authentic local character.
