Barnana was an eight year old brand deeply ingrained in the natural foods category, making products mostly from upcycled bananas. Their packaging struggled with clarity of communications as they grew into other formats and flavors — plantain chips, dipped bites, brittle and plantain tortilla chips.
The logo was very often missed by the consumer and flavors were sometimes difficult to find. They also had a new brand strategy that emphasized flavor & fun, so new packaging needed to show it!
We realized fairly early on that in order to embody the excitement & fun of the brand, we needed to collaborate with an illustrator. Speto is a well-known Brazilian street artist & was a perfect match for Barnana. He had a great blend of uninhibited energy without being childlike.
We developed a layout with dynamic typography, putting the logotype itself on an angle, so Nana (the character that embodies the spirit of Barnana) swings from the logotype without inhibitions.
The vibrant colors give energy and guide the eye through communications easily and effectively, making sure customers recognize the Barnana name, see the flavor they’re looking for, and easily understand what makes their products better than the competition.
And we didn’t stop with the front … the back tells a great story of why Barnana was created and more about the amazing flavors within each package.
The client was thrilled with the result! Sales have continued to skyrocket at Costco, where their plantain chips lead in salty snacks, and exploded in other natural and conventional grocery stores. They’ve also recently gotten into Target stores nationwide.
