Arcade Food Theatre | Poster Design by Ben Chamberlain, Norwich University of the Arts

Poster design for an ‘Arcade Food Theatre’ which uses food photographed from above to create one of the most iconic arcade game characters in history, Pac-Man.

The poster is extended through a range of different foods which are commonly sliced to show the wide variety of ingredients and products available such as cake, cheese, pizza and bread. As a natural occurrence which takes place when cutting into foods, bread crumbs, cheese wedges, mozzarella balls and cake crumbs are scattered to the right of the food to represent the small dots which the character eats in-game.

Additionally, the black slate background reflects the dark setting of the video game whilst relating to the premium, authentic nature of the kitchens. The ‘Arcade’ typography has been recreated from the original 8-bit Pac-Man typeface to enhance its authentic visual association, whilst its colour is sampled directly from the orange ghost character ‘Clyde’, further embellishing the accuracy of the design. Furthermore, the type is centralised to reflect the layout of the start and end screens.

The conceptual poster aims to make a playful visual connection between the ‘Arcade’ in the name and the food on offer, whilst making a bold visual statement that can be instantly understood.
