Akvile Terminaite Empowers Family Creativity Through Community Co-Design

Co-designed with families in Tower Hamlets, this project was created to nurture open-ended creativity and imagination within the home. By placing families at the centre of the design process, it recognised the importance of parents and children as co-creators of learning experiences that reflect their daily lives, cultures, and resources. Through collaborative workshops and home-based activities, families helped shape ideas that encouraged curiosity, play, and shared discovery, ensuring the project responded to real needs and diverse ways of learning.

The initiative supported children’s STEAM learning—Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics—through open-ended exploration rather than structured instruction. Everyday materials such as recycled items, natural objects, and household tools were used to inspire invention and problem-solving, showing that creativity and scientific thinking can thrive anywhere.

Accessibility was a key focus. Tower Hamlets’ multilingual and socio-economically diverse community shaped an approach that valued inclusivity and representation. Resources were produced in several languages and designed to suit different literacy levels, allowing all families to take part confidently. Visual prompts and bilingual storytelling supported understanding across cultures, while partnerships with local schools and community groups helped reach households who might otherwise face barriers to participation.

Beyond educational outcomes, the project strengthened family connections by inviting parents and children to become co-participants in creative play. Rather than positioning adults as teachers or organisers, the activities encouraged families to explore, experiment, and imagine together. Parents and children could follow each other’s ideas, make discoveries side by side, and share the joy of curiosity and invention. The home became a space for mutual learning—where creativity grew through conversation, laughter, and collective problem-solving. By co-designing with the community, the project built a sense of shared ownership and pride, showing that creativity and learning can thrive when families play and wonder together.
