Named after the old Scots word for apple, ‘Aipple’ is a light and refreshing cider made in small batches by the team from Hyrneside at Parkhill Farm in Newburgh, Fife, Scotland. Inspired by Newburgh’s history as an Orchard Town and the 830 year old story of local apple growing (which began with French monks in 1191), the Hyrneside team worked in partnership with the Woodland Trust to plant hundreds of apple trees on the farm — planting a careful mix of both Scottish Heritage and Classic Cider Apples.
Alleycropped with Parkhill Farm’s arable crops, the trees are underplanted with a permanent wildflower mix, which attracts pollinators and pest eating insects that spread throughout the crops, reducing the need for pesticides. Combined with foraged apples from the historic trees of the local parish orchards, some now wild and forgotten, the fruit was fermented over winter in 2021.
With cider apples as the only ingredient, reduce, reduce, reduce became the mantra and eventual outcome for the brand identity. That meant pairing everything back to the very bare essentials by simply displaying the name Aipple front and centre across all packaging touchpoints. This helped to build brand recognition whilst also creating real standout on the shelf. No colour, no illustrations and no snappy slogans. Just honest design that simply mirrors Aipple’s humble brand values.
The batch comes in 750ml bottles, 440ml cans and a special edition of 500ml bottles of Scottish whisky dry still cider. To taste, Aipple is a slightly sparkling, light and refreshing cider, with mellow apple aromas, a citrus note on the taste, good balance, and a crisp, dry finish.
