A Gentle Modernisation of Faith: Visual Identity for the Catholic Church in Denmark

A Gentle Modernisation of Faith: Visual Identity for the Catholic Church in Denmark

By Bureau 117, Denmark

In a close and respectful collaboration with the Diocese of Copenhagen, Danish design agency Bureau 117 has modernised the visual identity of the Catholic Church in Denmark.

The result is a carefully updated design system that honours centuries of tradition while bringing clarity, unity, and relevance to a contemporary audience.
A Sacred Challenge

“Designing for a religious institution is not an everyday task. This project called for deep cultural sensitivity, a thorough understanding of the Church’s symbolic language – and a humble approach to change. Our mission was not to reinvent, but to refine. Not to replace, but to realign,” says Creative Director Anders Kjærgaard from Bureau 117.

Working hand in hand with representatives from the Diocese, the agency revisited the Church’s visual foundations – from its historic coat of arms to its digital presence. The aim was to create a cohesive identity that would feel both familiar and renewed.
Tradition, Translated

At the heart of the new identity is a redesigned version of the Church’s historic coat of arms and logo – carefully refined for digital clarity while preserving its original symbolism. A new Danish wordmark was also developed, offering a consistent and approachable way to communicate with the public.

The refined colour palette is inspired by liturgical colours – rich with meaning and deeply rooted in the Church’s visual heritage. Used thoughtfully, the palette brings structure, hierarchy, and warmth to the communication.

Finally, the agency brought the identity to life in a new digital universe – a modern online presence that is both accessible and aligned with the Church’s renewed voice.
A Dialogue Between Past and Present

This project was never about aesthetics alone. It was about helping the Church communicate more clearly, connect more widely, and remain true to its values in a changing world. A careful balance between reverence and relevance.

While the visual language has evolved, the essence remains untouched.
