Cheese has spent decades in wax coatings, plastic clamshells, and shrink wrap. The specialty tier adds kraft paper and pastoral photography. Neither signals what Mitica’s Parmigiano Reggiano actually is: a World Cheese Award Super Gold winner, sourced from select farms, spanning four SKUs with meaningfully different aging profiles and origins.
Forever Cheese, the specialty food importer behind the Mitica brand, needed retail packaging for a new line of fixed-weight wedges — packaging that honored the product’s 25-year heritage, elevated it into luxury food packaging territory, and still held onto the brand warmth that made Mitica a specialty staple.
The strategy: restraint over decoration.
Most specialty cheese packaging design defaults to pastoral imagery and rustic textures, which leads to a visual shorthand that creates a category where everything reads the same. We stripped that out. The system Design Womb built runs on three elements: deep, saturated matte paper wraps in Mitica’s Mediterranean palette; gold foil stamping and a typographic system inspired from Italian editorial design and vintage type foundries that communicates each SKU’s aging, origin, and character without a single photograph.
The line features four SKUs, four distinct colorways: the 24-month classic, the crystal-studded 36-month reserve, the Montagna made exclusively in the mountains of Parma, and the Disolabruna, crafted from the milk of the rare Bruna Alpina breed. All four read as family. Mitica’s CPG line extension looks fresh, luxurious, and yet still attainable.
The packaging performs two jobs: it creates desire at point of purchase, and it accurately represents what’s inside. In specialty food, where the consumer is educated and skeptical, that alignment is everything. The packaging doesn’t overpromise. It finally catches up to what the product has been all along.
