The Moscow State University Botanical Garden is the Botanical Garden of the Faculty of Biology of Moscow University on Prospekt Mira. It is the oldest botanical garden in Russia, originally founded by Peter the Great in 1706 as an apothecary garden.
The rebranding concept is based on the synthesis of science and nature—two key components of the Botanical Garden’s identity. It is based not only on the desire to maintain historical continuity with Moscow State University but also to reimagine the garden’s role as a modern scientific and educational space. The new visual language combines academic rigor and living organics, creating a holistic and recognizable image.
The identity draws inspiration from the aesthetics of scientific atlases, herbariums, and botanical archives. Graphic elements—diagrams, captions, coordinate grids, and system notations—refer to research practice, emphasizing the scientific basis of the garden’s activities. At the same time, they are interpreted in a contemporary way, becoming part of a dynamic visual system capable of adapting to various media.
Dashed lines play a special role in the identity. They act as a universal graphic motif, uniting elements of the system and creating a sense of coherence. The dotted line becomes a metaphor for invisible yet strong connections—between continents, climates, ecosystems, and scientific disciplines. It visualizes the idea of the movement, exchange, and dissemination of knowledge, emphasizing that the Botanical Garden is a place where plants from all over the world meet and a global scientific dialogue is fostered.
The new logo develops from the existing visual identity, ensuring recognition and continuity. It is based on the image of a historical gate—a symbol of the entrance to a special space, the boundary between the city and nature, everyday life and research. The dotted line in the logo serves several functions: on the one hand, it interprets the decorative ornamentation of the gate, maintaining a connection to its historical appearance; on the other, it becomes a symbol of scientific knowledge as a process.
Thus, the new identity creates a multi-layered image of the Botanical Garden: as a historical site, a scientific center, and a living natural space. The essence of the brand becomes “A Garden of Scientific Discoveries”
