Granada Barrero Studio Develops Metro De Sevilla Wayfinding System With 160 Custom Pictograms and Enhanced Passenger Clarity

New Wayfinding System for Metro de Sevilla

Seville Metro unveils a new integrated wayfinding system
Granada Barrero Estudio has developed a new system for Line 1, featuring more than 160 newly created pictograms and a visual identity designed to stand the test of time.
The project received a mention in the Most Improved System category at the 2025 Global Light Rail Awards.
Seville/Huelva, March 2026 – Seville Metro has introduced a new integrated wayfinding system this year, designed by Granada Barrero Estudio, in an intervention that has transformed the underground network’s user experience and improved the legibility, safety and accessibility of its facilities.
The project covered the development of a design system for all 21 stations, as well as the interiors of the trains. The starting point was a rigorous assessment of the facilities, carried out using a design thinking methodology, which made it possible to identify the points at which information was failing or causing confusion for passengers.
From there, the studio developed all the elements that now make up the wayfinding proposal: station accesses, lift enclosures, concourse directories, platform signage and onboard safety signs. All of these were brought together in a coherent and versatile guidelines handbook.
A comprehensive analysis of user profiles
The project was based on a prior analysis developed by Agencia Inn, which defined typical user profiles, examined the diversity of physical, cultural and social abilities, and mapped the passenger journey throughout the system. Granada Barrero Estudio collaborated on the methodological framework for data collection and analysis and, based on that diagnosis, took charge of the overall design of the new system.
The result is a coherent and clearly defined proposal that organises information across platforms, concourses, station accesses and trains, and which was conceived to address the real needs identified in the study. The intervention focused on message clarity, reducing ambiguity and helping users anticipate decisions along their journey.
More than 160 bespoke pictograms and a new visual identity

One of the project’s central decisions was the development of a bespoke library of more than 160 pictograms, designed specifically for the metro system in the Andalusian capital. These cover situations ranging from bicycle and reduced-mobility access management to emergency signage and onboard safety messages. They were designed to work across all media and under all lighting conditions. The selected typeface, DM Sans, reinforces that legibility even in quick-reading situations.

The project also took into account the future growth of the metro network. To this end, Granada Barrero Estudio proposed a standardised colour palette to ensure consistency across materials and over time. The team also paid particular attention to coexistence with the Junta de Andalucía brand and to accessibility requirements, using contrast criteria verified in black and white.
A coherent, adaptable system with special recognition
The outcome of the new system is compiled in a wayfinding guidelines handbook and a catalogue of predefined signs that allow maintenance and installation teams to apply the system independently and consistently.
The handbook places particular emphasis on signage for spaces reserved for people with special needs and bicycles, lifts and train interiors, even taking into account seasonal variations for external access points.
The project received a Highly Commended mention in the Most Improved System category at the 2025 Global Light Rail Awards, one of the international urban rail sector’s benchmark awards. With this intervention, Seville Metro strengthens its commitment to public transport that is clearer, more accessible and better adapted to the diversity of its daily users.
