For the Year of the Horse, Penfolds partnered with Bulletproof to elevate its Lunar New Year release through a limited-edition gifting series designed to feel culturally meaningful, highly collectible and distinctly premium during one of the brand’s most significant calendar moments.
Bulletproof’s bespoke design drew inspiration from the traditional Chinese craft of paper folding — a practice rooted in precision, patience and layered complexity. Rather than depict the horse through two-dimensional illustration, the team translated it into sculptural form. By pushing the limits of die-cutting, Bulletproof created layered structural elements, intentional creases and spatial depth that bring the horse to life. This dimensional design language conveys strength, speed and perseverance, while giving each touchpoint a tactile, immersive quality.
The system was adapted across five distinct wine blends, retaining visual coherence while celebrating the individual character of each BIN. Beyond the bottle, the series extended into bespoke non-wine gifting experiences. A custom Lunar New Year mahjong set and a Horse Edition wine stopper were developed as both functional objects and collectible keepsakes. A specially engineered Grange tool was also designed to interact with and reveal the layered artwork, introducing a ceremonial moment to the unboxing experience.
The result is a refined and culturally resonant Lunar New Year collection. The structural paper-folding execution and multi-touchpoint craftsmanship reflect Penfolds’ enduring commitment to precision, quality and heritage — not only in winemaking, but in the way the brand expresses itself through design.
