Brand Philosophy
MOMENTO is conceived as a space dedicated to the moment—a temporal fragment in which time slows, presence deepens, and experience gains meaning.
Rather than functioning merely as a coffee venue, MOMENTO positions itself as a place to remain, where visitors are not compelled to move on, but are gently invited to stay longer.
The brand is founded on the belief that meaningful experiences do not emerge from speed or excess, but from attentiveness, restraint, and duration. Coffee, acoustic music, and spatial atmosphere are therefore treated not as primary attractions, but as mediums through which moments are extended and internalized.
Conceptual Challenge
The core challenge in developing MOMENTO’s visual identity lay in translating an intangible and ephemeral concept—“the moment”—into a coherent and enduring visual system.
The brand required a symbol capable of expressing slowness, reflection, and emotional continuity, while remaining culturally grounded and adaptable to contemporary design contexts.
Rather than adopting literal representations of time, the identity draws from sound, rhythm, and silence—elements that shape human perception of duration more profoundly than clocks or numbers. This approach naturally led to the exploration of traditional acoustic instruments as symbolic carriers of temporal experience.
The Moon Lute (Đàn Nguyệt) as Core Symbol
The Moon Lute (Đàn Nguyệt) was selected as the central symbolic reference for MOMENTO’s identity.
Originating around the 11th century, the Moon Lute holds a significant place in both Vietnamese court and folk music traditions. Its name derives from its circular body, resembling the full moon—an image deeply embedded in East Asian cultural philosophy.
Within this cultural framework, the moon is not merely a celestial form, but a metaphor for:
Cyclical time rather than linear progression
Memory, introspection, and emotional continuity
Stillness within motion
In classical poetry and traditional performance contexts, the Moon Lute frequently accompanies moments of quiet reflection: nighttime contemplation, fleeting encounters, and subtle emotional transitions. It is rarely associated with spectacle or intensity, but instead with intimacy and inward listening.
Sound, Silence, and Temporal Experience
The acoustic character of the Moon Lute further reinforces its conceptual alignment with MOMENTO.
Its sound is clear and resonant, yet never forceful. Each note naturally leaves behind a measured silence, allowing sound to linger rather than conclude abruptly. These pauses are not absences, but integral components of the music itself—spaces where emotion unfolds gradually.
This sonic structure mirrors the intended experience within MOMENTO:
Coffee is consumed without urgency
Acoustic music functions as an ambient presence rather than a performance
Time is perceived as expanded, not segmented
In this sense, the Moon Lute does not mark time—it softens it.
Translation into Visual Identity
The MOMENTO logo and typographic system are derived from the formal and structural qualities of the Moon Lute, abstracted and refined to suit a contemporary visual language.
Key elements include:
Circular geometry, referencing the moon, the body of the instrument, and the cyclical nature of time
Soft, restrained line work, reflecting acoustic subtlety and emotional calm
Intentional negative space, treated as an active design element, analogous to silence in music
Rather than illustrating the instrument directly, the design seeks to capture its philosophical essence—balance, restraint, and resonance beyond the visible form.
Through the Moon Lute, MOMENTO establishes a dialogue between:
Tradition and modernity
Sound and silence
Movement and stillness
The brand does not aim to arrest time, but to create conditions in which time feels generous. MOMENTO becomes a setting where moments are not consumed, but inhabited.
MOMENTO is not designed to accelerate experience.
It exists to give moments the space to last.
