Dr Rock Shapes Akoma’s Identity to Showcase African Excellence Globally

AKOMA is a Ghanaian luxury brand I created to redefine how African-made products are perceived in the global market. The aim was to build a brand that feels premium yet deeply connected to Ghanaian culture and values. The vision was clear — to challenge the idea that luxury only comes from Europe and prove that true craftsmanship, heritage, and beauty can emerge from Africa.

The identity draws inspiration from Adinkra symbolism, combining Akoma (the heart) and Fawohodie (freedom and independence). Together, they represent love, self-worth, and liberation. I designed a logo that merges these meanings into one seamless symbol — a balanced, geometric form that feels both modern and timeless. The accompanying serif typography reinforces a sense of refinement and cultural depth, giving the logo a confident yet warm presence.

The visual system is built around a rich color palette of turquoise, gold, and orange. Each color was chosen intentionally: turquoise for calm strength, gold for heritage and luxury, and orange for energy and optimism. The typography system, with Romanus for the logo and Tordoenska for secondary text, balances classic luxury with contemporary clarity.

The main challenge was achieving harmony between cultural authenticity and a modern, international aesthetic. I wanted the brand to honor Ghana’s visual language without appearing overly traditional. My solution was to abstract traditional Adinkra motifs into minimalist, scalable forms that adapt across packaging, digital, and print materials. This approach gave the brand flexibility while maintaining its symbolic meaning.

The result is a cohesive, versatile identity system that communicates sophistication, confidence, and purpose. AKOMA stands as a proud representation of African excellence — a brand that celebrates heritage, independence, and love while setting a new benchmark for Ghanaian-made luxury on the world stage.
