La Tomatina is a world-famous Spanish festival held annually in Buñol — a celebration defined by energy, color, and collective joy. Every August, thousands of people gather in the narrow streets to take part in a massive tomato fight that has become a symbol of fun, freedom, and togetherness.
The main creative challenge for this project was to capture the chaotic and festive spirit of La Tomatina while working under a strict conceptual limitation: the entire identity had to be created exclusively through typography, without the use of images, illustrations, or graphic symbols. This restriction shaped the visual language and encouraged an experimental approach focused on composition, rhythm, and a typographic structure inspired by the metaphor of a crushed tomato.
The work explores the possibility of reflecting the atmosphere of the social environment through experimental and dynamic typographic solutions. The typographic system aims to evoke traces of crushed tomatoes by using varying letter thicknesses to create a sense of splashes, depth, volume, and dynamism. A moment of chaos becomes visual.
The letters scattered, rotated, and dynamically composed to evoke the explosive nature of the tomato-throwing event. Typography becomes both message and image, embodying the motion, rhythm, and vitality of the festival.
The color palette consists solely of red and white — a direct nod to tomatoes, Spain’s national colors, and the vivid contrast found on the streets of Buñol during the celebration.
The resulting identity system is designed to express La Tomatina’s essence — unrestrained fun within an organized structure. The visual language was intended to reflect the dynamic contrast and collective energy characteristic of Spain’s festival.
