Its origins trace back to the 18th century at the Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon, where monks crafted it from a simple convent recipe. Over time, this humble custard tart evolved into a culinary symbol recognized around the world, celebrated for its delicate, creamy filling, caramelized top, and perfectly crisp pastry. Beyond its taste, the pastel de nata represents Portuguese tradition, artisanal craftsmanship, and a rich cultural heritage that continues to inspire both chefs and pastry enthusiasts.

This project aimed to create packaging that not only protects the pastry but also communicates its cultural and symbolic significance. The identity developed, Ouro de Portugal (Portuguese Gold), positions the pastel de nata as a luxury product, connecting it to gold, a universally recognized symbol of value, excellence, and prestige. This branding elevates the pastry from a beloved treat to a refined, high-end experience.

The packaging design, finished with a metallic sheen, resembles a gold bar, evoking both elegance and the golden, caramelized surface of the tart itself. Its minimalist design emphasizes sophistication while keeping the product at the heart of the experience. Every detail, from the choice of materials to the finishes, was carefully considered to communicate quality, authenticity, and refinement.

Designed to hold six pastéis de nata, the box becomes more than packaging; it is a cultural artifact and statement piece. It transforms the pastry into a gift of high symbolic and emotional value, reflecting both Portuguese excellence and the artisanal care invested in each tart. Through Ouro de Portugal (Portuguese Gold), the pastel de nata is not merely a dessert but an emblem of tradition, craftsmanship, and global culinary prestige, ready to be shared and appreciated around the world.
